Did you know

that over the past ten years
the number of students involved
in daily physical education has
fallen by more than a third?

~ Center for Disease Control and Prevention

“This gave a few of my students a chance to excel who do not usually get that chance in the classroom. One of my students has a very hard time focusing, yet she was more focused in RECESS.”
-Bunche ECDC Teacher

Tulsa Children’s Museum is partnering with RECESS (Resource Education for Calming Energizing Self- Awareness and Self-Regulation) and the YMCA’s GO Club to bring a unique program to under-served and low-income Tulsa students that combines the benefits of mind-body physical education with those of play. Instruction focuses on physical movements that build strength, improve balance, and increase flexibility. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques round out the classes, giving children the tools they need to relax, focus, improve self-control, and deal with every day stressors.

Who is Served?
TCM is committed to helping all children lead healthy lives. But for now, we’re focusing on those most at risk for childhood obesity and its associated health risks. Classes are taught to small groups of students at local public schools with a high proportion of low-income students. We are also continuing to work with the YMCA to expand into even more under-served areas.
