Reclaim This! At Home
The idea of Reclaim This! is to raise awareness of the 3 R’s: recycling, reusing, and reducing consumable materials in the home. So put on your thinking cap and turn the creativity knob on high. You will find that the possibilities are endless when you reclaim items in your home. Here is a wonderful way to get started:
Bottle Cap Art
- Lids of various sizes and colors (large, small, plastic, metal- the more variety the better)
- Scrap cardboard (shoe boxes, food boxes and moving boxes work well)
- Embellishments (spare buttons, scrap paper, tin foil, etc.)
- Glue
- Markers
With adult supervision, cut a piece of cardboard into the size and shape that you wish your background to be. Think of a design that you would like to create. Choose lids and start placing them on the board (no gluing yet) experimenting with the various colors, sizes, and textures until you reach your desired design. Then carefully lift each lid and place a dot of glue on the lid to secure it to the board. Now complete your art work using your spare embellishments, markers or crayons.
Here’s a few ideas to get you started:
- Snowflake – big lid in center with medium and small lids coming off the sides
- Snowman – one small, medium and large lid one on top of the other. Use scrap paper for hat and/or the buttons, sticks from your yard for arms and legs, and beads and/or buttons for the eyes.
- Self Portrait – use a large lid for your face, small lids for your eyes, scrap paper for other features of your face, and yarn for your hair. Consider cutting the lids or using a shape punch for a decorative finish.
